Latin America Faces the Twenty-First Century: Reconstructing a Social Justice Agenda

What are Latin America's prospects for the twenty-first century, in the face of rapidly changing international conditions and increasing internal social pressures? In this volume eminent Latin American scholars and activists explore their collective future. They analyze a wide range of issues, including economic alternatives to neoliberal policies, the democratization of state and civil society, new forms of political organizations, and the role of women and indigenous peoples as protagonists of social change. In each case they focus on reconstructing a social justice agenda for debates about Latin America's future. The discussions illuminate issues that are not only of direct concern to Latin Americanists but also of considerable relevance to progressives who are thinking about new alternatives and new agendas for the United States.
